Trimethoprim is an antibiotic used to treat urinary tract infections (UTIs). The drug helps relieve the burning pain, itching, and discomfort that comes with UTIs. Trimethoprim helps women, who are more prone to UTIs than men, to manage their symptoms. It is advisable to maintain cleanliness and sexual hygiene to prevent UTIs from recurring. Taking a three-day course of Trimethoprim will clear most bladder and urinary tract infections.
Trimethoprim is an antibiotic that fights bacterial infections by targeting the bacteria causing the problem. It works by blocking an essential enzyme that bacteria need to make folic acid, which is crucial for their growth and survival. Without this enzyme, the bacteria can’t produce the necessary components to multiply and spread, allowing your body’s immune system to clear the infection more effectively.
Trimethoprim is most commonly used to treat urinary tract infections (UTIs) but may also be used for other bacterial infections. By stopping bacterial growth, Trimethoprim helps you recover from infections more quickly, reducing symptoms like pain, burning, or discomfort.
Avoid Trimethoprim for treating UTI infections if the following apply to you:
Your treatment contains 200mg of Trimethoprim per tablet.
Each tablet also contains the inactive ingredients anhydrous lactose, colloidal silicon dioxide, magnesium stearate, sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium starch glycolate, and stearic acid.
Consult your GP if you experience:
1. How long does it take for Trimethoprim to work?
Most people see improvement within a few days, but it’s important to complete the entire course as prescribed by your doctor.
2. Can I take Trimethoprim if I am pregnant?
Trimethoprim is not generally recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy due to its impact on folic acid levels. Your doctor may prescribe folic acid supplements if needed.
3. What are common side effects?
Common side effects include nausea, headache, itching, and diarrhoea. Serious side effects, like severe allergic reactions, are rare.
4. Can Trimethoprim affect contraception?
It may reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives if you experience vomiting or diarrhoea for more than 24 hours.
5. How should I take Trimethoprim?
Take the tablets twice daily, ideally spaced 12 hours apart, and continue the full course even if symptoms improve. Trimethoprim can be taken with or without food
