Description

What is Orlistat?

Orlistat 120mg Capsules is a weight-loss medication designed to help individuals who are overweight or obese to lose weight. It works by blocking the absorption of about one-third of the fat consumed in food. When combined with a healthy, reduced-calorie diet, it can help reduce body weight over time. Orlistat is commonly prescribed to people with a body mass index (BMI) over 30 or those with a BMI over 28 who have related health conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes.

How Does it Work?

Orlistat is a gastrointestinal lipase inhibitor, meaning it works by blocking the enzymes that break down fat in the intestines. This prevents the body from absorbing approximately 30% of the fat consumed, allowing it to be excreted through bowel movements. By reducing fat absorption, Orlistat helps lower calorie intake, leading to gradual and sustained weight loss when used in conjunction with a low-fat, calorie-controlled diet.

Warnings

  • Orlistat may modify the activity of certain drugs. Make sure you speak to your doctor before using Orlistat if you are on other medications.
  • Orlistat may unbalance an anticonvulsant treatment by decreasing the absorption of antiepileptic drugs, thus leading to convulsions.

Directions

Take the tablets 3 times daily for 7 days 1 hour after a meal. If you skip a meal or eat a low-fat meal, there will be no fat to absorb. You, therefore, do not need to swallow Orlistat capsules.

FAQs

1. How often should I take Orlistat?

Take one 120mg capsule with each main meal containing fat (up to three times daily). It should be taken during the meal or within one hour afterward.

2. What happens if I eat a fat-free meal?

If you eat a meal without fat, you can skip that dose of Orlistat, as it only works by preventing the absorption of dietary fat.

3. Are there any dietary restrictions while taking Orlistat?

Yes, you should maintain a balanced, low-fat diet. Excessive fat intake can lead to unpleasant side effects such as oily stools or flatulence.

4. Can I take Orlistat with other medications?

Orlistat can interact with certain medications, so consult your healthcare provider if you're taking other medications, especially for thyroid problems, diabetes, or epilepsy.

5. How long does it take to see results?

Weight loss may begin within the first few weeks of treatment, but it works best when combined with a healthy diet and exercise. Results vary depending on individual factors.
