Injectable GLP-1 treatments like Wegovy have transformed the landscape over the past few years.

Hundreds of thousands of people across the UK have achieved meaningful, sustained weight loss with Wegovy.

But for many, the idea of a weekly injection has always been a sticking point. That’s about to change.

In June 2026, the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) approved Wegovy in tablet form. This makes it the first daily oral GLP-1 weight loss pill to receive the green light in the UK.

It’s a genuinely significant moment, and at Onlinemeds we’re excited to offer it to our patients as soon as it becomes available on private prescription.

Here’s everything you need to know.

The Same Proven Medication, in a Whole New Format

The Wegovy pill contains the same active ingredient as the injection – semaglutide – and works in exactly the same way.

It mimics a natural gut hormone called GLP-1, which reduces appetite, slows digestion and helps you feel full for longer.

The result is a meaningful reduction in calorie intake and, over time, significant weight loss.

The MHRA’s approval is based on data from the OASIS 4 phase 3 clinical trial, which followed adults with obesity or overweight over 64 weeks.

The results were impressive: participants taking the oral Wegovy tablet lost an average of 13.6% of their body weight, compared to just 2.4% in the placebo group.

Among those who completed the full course of treatment, average weight loss reached around 17%.

For context, the injectable version of Wegovy showed around 14.9% average weight loss in its pivotal STEP 1 trial.

The difference between the two formats is minimal, and not considered clinically significant. Put simply – the pill works.

Pill vs Injection: How Do They Compare?

It’s a fair question, and one we expect a lot of our patients will be asking. Here’s a straightforward breakdown.

Effectiveness: As the trial data above shows, both formats deliver comparable weight loss results.

The injection has a higher bioavailability – meaning more of the drug is absorbed directly into the bloodstream.

The pill compensates for this with a higher dose and a specialist ingredient called SNAC, which helps the stomach absorb semaglutide effectively. The end result, in terms of weight loss, is broadly the same.

Dosing frequency: The injection is taken once a week. The pill is taken once daily.

For some people, a daily routine fits more naturally into their lifestyle. It’s the same as taking any other tablet, making it easy to incorporate into a morning routine.

Taking the pill correctly: To get the best results from the oral tablet, it should be taken first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, with no more than 120ml of plain water, at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking other oral medications.

This is an important step – the absorption mechanism only works properly under these conditions. For most people it quickly becomes second nature.

Side effects: Both formats share a similar side effect profile, with nausea and digestive discomfort being the most commonly reported.

These are typically most noticeable in the early weeks of treatment and tend to settle as your body adjusts.

Why the Pill Has Some Real Practical Advantages

Beyond the clinical numbers, the shift to a pill format opens up Wegovy to a much wider group of people – including many who were never keen on injections in the first place.

Here’s why the tablet is a genuinely attractive option:

No injections. This is the obvious one. Needle anxiety is real, and for a significant proportion of people it has been a genuine barrier to starting treatment. The Wegovy pill removes that barrier entirely. No pen, no needle, no injection site reactions.

No fridge required. Injectable Wegovy needs to be kept refrigerated, which creates logistical challenges at home and especially when travelling. The tablet can be stored at room temperature, making it far more convenient for everyday life.

No sharps bin. Used injection pens need to be disposed of safely in a sharps bin – an extra step that many patients find cumbersome. With a tablet, there’s nothing to dispose of beyond the blister pack.

Much easier to travel with. If you’ve ever tried to travel with injectable medication, you’ll know the hassle: keeping it cold, navigating airport security, worrying about it overheating on a long journey. The Wegovy pill travels like any other tablet. Pop it in your wash bag and go.

For people with busy lives, frequent travellers, or anyone who has hesitated because of the injection aspect, the pill format is a compelling step forward.

Who Is It For?

Like the injectable version, the Wegovy pill is licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27 or above with at least one weight-related health condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol.

It should be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

The MHRA has approved it for private prescription, and it is currently under review by NICE for potential NHS availability in due course.
