If you are considering an online weight management consultation, it helps to know exactly what is involved from start to finish.
This guide walks you through the process in three stages: what to think about before you begin, what happens during the consultation itself, and what to expect afterwards, from delivery and storage through to the ongoing support available to you.
Before Your Consultation
Understanding the Health Risks of Being Overweight
Carrying excess weight is linked to a number of health conditions. Nearly 9 in 10 people with type 2 diabetes are living with overweight or obesity, as excess weight can reduce the body’s sensitivity to insulin, making blood sugar harder to regulate.
Overweight and obesity are also associated with a raised risk of high blood pressure and unhealthy cholesterol levels, both of which contribute to cardiovascular disease.
Other associated conditions include joint problems such as osteoarthritis, reduced lung function, and obstructive sleep apnoea, which itself carries further long-term health risks.
Excess weight is also linked to certain mental health conditions and a small number of cancers.
Nationally, obesity-related illness is estimated to cost the NHS around £6.5 billion a year, a figure projected to rise significantly by 2050 without a change in trend, which is part of why structured weight management support has become a mainstream part of NHS and private healthcare.
Are You Eligible for a Weight Management Consultation?
Eligibility for prescription weight management treatment is based on clinical guidelines.
As a general rule, private services can consider patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27 or above alongside at least one weight-related health condition, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, raised cholesterol, sleep apnoea, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), or osteoarthritis.
If you are of South Asian, Chinese, or other East or Southeast Asian family background, the threshold is typically lower, from a BMI of 27.5, as research shows this group can develop weight-related health risks at a lower BMI than the wider population.
It is important to note that meeting these general criteria does not guarantee a prescription: your full eligibility is only confirmed once a registered clinician has reviewed your complete medical history during your consultation.
During Your Consultation
Once you have checked the general eligibility criteria above, the consultation itself is where those details are properly assessed. Here is what actually happens once you begin.
A Fast, Convenient Process
One of the main benefits of an online consultation is convenience. You can complete your assessment from home, at a time that suits you, without travelling to a clinic or waiting for an appointment slot.
The questionnaire is designed to be straightforward and can typically be completed in a matter of minutes.
Secure and Confidential
Your consultation is handled through a secure, encrypted platform, in line with UK data protection law.
The medical information you provide is treated as confidential and is used solely to assess your suitability for treatment.
As a registered pharmacy, we are required to meet strict standards around how patient information is stored and handled.
Clinical Review by a Registered Prescriber
Once submitted, your consultation is reviewed by a UK-registered prescriber, not an algorithm.
This review considers your current health conditions, any medication you are already taking, possible contraindications, and the comorbidities relevant to your eligibility.
If the clinician needs more information, they may contact you before making a decision. If treatment is not appropriate for you, they will explain why and, where relevant, suggest other options, including speaking to your NHS GP.
After Your Consultation
Approval is only the start of the process. What happens next, from the moment your medication is dispatched to the support available once you are using it, matters just as much to a safe, successful outcome.
Medication Delivery
If your consultation is successful, your medication is dispatched in discreet, unbranded packaging with tracked delivery, so you know when to expect it.
Where a medication requires temperature-controlled transport, this is handled accordingly, and you will receive confirmation with tracking details once your order is on its way, along with guidance on what to do if you are not going to be in to receive it.
Storing Your Medication Safely
Always follow the patient information leaflet supplied with your specific medication, as storage requirements can vary.
Some treatments need to be kept refrigerated until first use, while others can be stored at room temperature for a limited period once opened, the leaflet will confirm which applies to you.
Always check the expiry date and keep medication out of the reach of children.
If your treatment involves self-injecting, used needles and pens must go into a proper sharps bin, never into household waste.
Sharps bins are available free from your pharmacy or GP surgery, and most UK local authorities offer a free collection service for domestic clinical waste, your pharmacy team can advise on how to arrange this in your area.
Possible Side Effects
As with any prescription medicine, side effects are possible.
The patient information leaflet included with your treatment sets out the specific side effects associated with what has been prescribed to you, and your prescriber will talk you through this as part of your consultation.
Effects reported with weight management treatments are generally mild, often relate to digestion, and tend to ease over time as your body adjusts.
If you experience side effects that concern you, contact your prescriber or pharmacist, or call NHS 111 for advice.
If you experience a severe reaction, seek emergency medical attention immediately.
Ongoing Support
Weight management works best with structured, ongoing support rather than a single prescription.
You will have access to follow-up reviews to check your progress, discuss any side effects, and adjust your plan safely where needed.
Our clinical team, including our pharmacists, are available if you have questions at any stage, alongside general lifestyle and dietary guidance to help support your results.
We would also recommend letting your NHS GP know about any private treatment you are receiving, so your care remains coordinated, particularly if you have an existing health condition or take other regular medication.
If your circumstances change, for example if you become pregnant, are diagnosed with a new condition, or start a new medication, let your prescriber know as soon as possible so your treatment plan can be reviewed.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the online consultation take?
Most people complete the questionnaire in a matter of minutes, at a time that suits them.
Is an online consultation as safe as seeing someone in person?
Yes. Your consultation is reviewed by a UK-registered prescriber who applies the same clinical safety checks used in an in-person appointment.
What happens if I am not eligible?
Your prescriber will explain why treatment is not suitable for you at this time and, where appropriate, point you towards other options, including your NHS GP.
Should I tell my GP I am using this service?
We would recommend it. Keeping your GP informed helps ensure your care is joined up, especially if you have other health conditions or take other medicines.
What if my medication needs are ongoing?
Weight management is rarely a one-off treatment. Your prescriber will schedule follow-up reviews to check how you are getting on, and your treatment plan can be adjusted, paused, or stopped based on how you respond, always with your safety as the priority.
